Coursework is assessed in a variety of ways, including essays, case studies, presentations, tests and mooting. A total of twelve law modules and six politics modules are studied over the course of three years. These modules include the core law modules needed for Qualifying Law Degree status. Focusing on specific thinkers and themes, it engages with the political thought of significant intellectuals and political leaders , and examines different forms of anti-colonial politics, including nationalism, socialism and ‘third-worldism’. In terms of material to be studied, while academic literature is important, students will be encouraged to listen to and think critically about songs, albums and videos as texts which either implicitly or explicitly engage or challenge the political.

This enhances what is a fascinating subject, and enables you to build well researched evidence bases and advocate your position, which is critically and vitally important in whichever professional occupation you aim to pursue. Short and online courses

Year 2 students on this degree programme can also include optional modules from the School of International Relations & Politics. Holders of a Bachelors degree from a recognised Vietnamese institution (usually achieved with the equivalent of a second class upper or a grade point average minimum GPA of 7.0 and above) will be considered for postgraduate study at Diploma or Masters level. Holders of the Licenciatura/Título or an equivalent professional title from a recognised Venezuelan university may be considered for entry to a postgraduate degree programme. Scales of 1-5, 1-10 and 1-20 are used, an overall score of 70% or equivalent can be considered equivalent to a UK 2.1. Holders of a bachelor degree with honours from a recognised Caribbean and West Indies university may be considered for entry to a postgraduate degree programme. Holders of the Título de Licenciado /Título de (4-6 years) or an equivalent professional title from a recognised Paraguayan university may be considered for entry to a postgraduate degree programme.

The Politics of Identity – The origins of ‘identity politics’ can be traced back to the Civil Rights movement in the USA; in the present day, identity politics encompasses post-colonialism, feminism, men’s movements and activism based on sexual orientation or ethnicity. The module requires students to study a broad range of literature which explores competing interpretations and explanations of social identity formation, including challenges to the idea that identities are stable and singular. The module promotes in depth, critical enquiry and insight in the subject area using current issues and case studies as a platform for developing specialist knowledge.
